Citizenship Eligibility

If you have a green card and want to apply for citizenship, we need to make sure that you are eligible. If you do not have a green card, or you want to begin the immigration process for someone else, please start here.

Refer to the M-480 to see a more comprehensive list of requirements, but listed here are the main ones that will apply to most people.

  • Are you over 18? Have you had a green card for at least five years?

  • Have you lived in the same district for at least three months? Since Texas is broken up, have you lived in Dallas for at least three months?

  • Are you in good moral standing? Among other things, this means that you have not served more than five years in jail (or 180 days in the past five years), or lied on your application. Letters from community and religious leaders can count in your favor, but all crimes and untruths count against you.

If you feel that you are eligible, file your N-400.

You may want to refer ahead to the interview resources if you feel your level of English or knowledge about the U.S. need(s) a lot of work.
